I am a strong believer in Australia's federal system of government.I support state and territory rights. However the recent intervention by the Federal Government in aboriginal communities here in the N.T. and the funding of a hospital in Tasmania, whilst not desirable, has only become necessary because of the pathetically inept management of taxpayers funds by all state and territory Labor Governments. Whether in health, aboriginal affairs or any section of government, Labor has created huge wasteful bureaucratic empires which of course remove resources from the "coal face" where they are needed. Ex-union officials and former government employees which make up almost all Labor Governments, clearly have no real-world experience in management, hence the regular plethora of state and territory government failures.

So Sid Stirling has raised the posibility of an excess water charge being levied on Territorians in an attempt to reduce our water consumption. If there was ever any doubt that the Martin Government is controlled by specially selected southern Labor advisors who set up silly problems to be "solved" then this latest nonsense takes the cake. Most of these problems do of course have left-leaning "control the people" type solutions. For example: *Over the top unnecessary southern style pool fencing regulations when no problem other than lack of individual responsibility ever existed. *The equally unnecessary and unjustified removal unlimited speed limits on our highways. *And now the mooted excess water charges. Once again for no reason other than to appease some "save the planet" greenies who inhabit the vast ALP bureaucracies of the Martin Labor Government! Unnecessary, costly rules and regulations are always a certainty with Labor. They are all part of the "Labor Way" of mismanagement.

Dave it's great to see you're taking an interest in crime - just a shame that those who are responsible for this (NTG)aren't taking the same interest. So Alice Springs is getting 15 new cops. Where are they coming from? Darwin, Katherine, or some remote community? Clare is just moving chairs on the Titanic. Stuff Statehood, I think it's about time the Fed's took over the NT Police - we might at last start to feel safe in our own homes.

Territorians, considering a vote for Kevin Rudd at this years' federal election should think long and hard about the Australia we have now and the kind of Australia we are likely to have under Labor. For a glimpse of what life would be like under Labor,I suggest anyone interested, examine the atrocious record of management by all State and Territory Labor Governments. The states of New South Wales and Victoria, despite receiving record funding from the GST are verging on recession. The other states and territories, especially those with mineral resources are of course doing better, but the same disease has infected all of them. I refer to big government and all the insidious afflictions that come with it. Such as: Massive over-manning of already bloated bureaucracies;increasingly unnecessary regulation of business and individuals;wasteful allocation of taxpayers funds to a range of useless "causes"; and of course increased taxes and charges to pay for all this largesse. Those who remember the disastrous Whitlam years and the financial incompetence of Hawke and Keating, will get to see it all over again if Kevin Rudd becomes Prime Minister.

Mate, who would have thought it - 2% unemployment rate in the NT! More and more jobs being created despite the efforts of Clare and her cronies. John Howard has been the best PM for the Territory - why change something if it isn't broke - and keeps getting better?

My view when the Farrar Medical Centre was first mooted, was always that it was going to be an expensive white elephant! If the private sector wasn't interested in owning and operating such a medical centre, then realistically it should not have been built! Obviously the Health Department is` massively overstaffed with mostly dead wood "managers" and other assorted public service "timeservers". This is most likely the main reason for the lack of funds available to operate such an elaborate facility! Whilst the Martin Government continues to copy all that is bad from the Labor States(big expensive bloated wasteful government),real spending necessities such as health at the "coal face" are becoming increasingly difficult!! Those who doubt what I am saying should take a trip to Queensland,New South Wales or Victoria. These states have all failed economically due to extremely poor management practices! The Martin Labor Government is clearly using the same failed formula! New taxes and charges, on top of the increased traffic fines are just around the corner!

Recently, it has been announced that the after-hours clinic at the Farrar Medical Centre would be closed. This was the only after-hours clinic that bulked billed in palmerston or the rural area! Orginally, the Labour governement gave us this clinic as a 24/7 clinic. Then they axed it to an after hours only clinic. Now they are removing it completely! Is this another in a long list of promises that the current government has broken? How do they expect Palmerston to remain an attractive and growing community for families if the basic medical care in not provided here? Where are all the people who can't afford to pay the $50-80 out of pocket to receive medical care at the Oasis Medical Centre suppose to go now when their kids get sick? Oh yeah, they are to go to the over-crowded ED at the public hospital and wait hours on end to drive teh 30-40 minutes home in the early hours of the morning..... Sad thing is our local MLA's have remained silent on this important issue. What can we do to stop the constant breaking of promises by this current government. When will they start actually caring about the people who elected them to represent us?

Hi Dav. The ALP (The Martin Goverment) said that they would and could connect the power to Dundee Beach for $5million (CLP did there home work on the costing of this project and said it was more like $12 million) Sofa THE MARTIN GOVERMENT has spent approx $8 million on the project and that is only for some people to have power connected and have basically what is an essential service.I live in stage 1A of Dundee Beach and am not being hooked up to power. We along with other permanent resident of Stage 1A who waited so long for the power . Have been told by Rob Knight our local ALP member for Daley/ Michell Bock of power and water and Mr Bertram Birk from power and water . That there was not enough funding from the MARTIN GOVERMENT for everyone in stage 1A to have the power connected. And if we want it we can cough up out of our own pockets for the power to run down our street. I have been a tax payer in Territory for 30 years and am totally giscusted with the attitude that the Martin Goverment has taken towards her own election promice. She promised the power to Dundee Beach and that is what we want. Diesel is at $1.40 per litre and at an average of 0.7of a litr an hour to run run a generator 24 hours a day 7 days a week it is becoming impossible to continue like this .We want the power now along with the rest of them. G'day Dave. I'd like to respond to Justin's contribution. Justin wrote: "Dave, thanks so much for conducting an on-line poll which measured 67% support for funding the Environment Centre." Well, I'm sorry Justin, you got it wrong. The poll showed 67% of people wanted to DEFUND the Environment Centre. OH Well, better luck next time. Oh and Dave have you seen the loopy nowaste.org site? Check it out. And mate, keep up the good work. We saw you at the Crime Forum in Malak the other week. You're doing a good job.

David...I refer to the release of a plan to convert the WW2 oil tank on the esplanade to a history museum. I can assure you that an old Darwin resident whose name escapes me now canvassed a concept of this nature combined with a butterfly display long before you or our current Lord Mayor entered the political domain. Whilst I was a Town Planning Inspector with the then Planning Branch of Lands Dept. this person approached the Town Planners of the day with detailed plans that looked like a good idea to me. I don't know that he got much of a hearing. My recollections are that he could not raise the necessary monies req. for such a development. I think it has already been kicked around long before today however to see a development of this nature would be good for the Territory as it appears that we are about to lose the crocs as we did the buffalos from our tourist attractions.
